Grenache, Carignan, Syrah
Just half an hour north-west of Montpellier brings you to the relatively new appellation of Terrasses du Larzac. The rising star of the Languedoc, the Mayfair of the Languedoc, the Grand Cru of the Languedoc, the best wines of the Languedoc etc. The most famous red wine of the Languedoc, Mas de Daumas Gassic is close by and this is the place all dynamic young winemakers want to be.
The special deep red rocky soils rich in iron oxide, the massive diurnal temperature range as much as 20C between night and day all help to produce full-bodied fruity red wines that also have crispness and elegance.
Le Clos Rouge vineyard was created from scratch by artisan winemakers Joel and Kystel. This is not so much a job nor a business for them but more “a way of life”. From hand-harvested old vines averaging 50 years old, this organic blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Carignan, and 20% Syrah gives a deep ruby red wine with a powerful fruity nose of ripe cherries. Soft, succulent and very juicy this wine is surprisingly very easy to drink. Wild blackberry, dark plums, white pepper, chocolate, liquorice, smoke and garrigue herbs all wrapping round a velvety tannin and rich elegant core – yes, a lot going on!
A food wine to be enjoyed with anything rich and intense or alternatively a contemplation wine on its own by the fireside.
