St. Estèphe, Chateau Meyney 2020 (6b case)
£162.00
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot
This wine is a real steal. Many famous wine critics – think Hugh Johnson, Jane Anson, Jancis Robinson amongst others, believe that Chateau Meyney drinks like a Grand Cru Classe Bordeaux but without the crazy price-tag. Ch. Meyney certainly occupies a prime position in St. Estèphe, with a single 51-hectare parcel of vines on a sloping rise next to 2GCC Ch. Montrose. In 2004 the bank Credit Agricole purchased Ch. Meyney and they have not hesitated to “splash the cash” to drive quality onwards and upwards.
A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot with an unusually high 15% of Petit Verdot which gives the wine its attractive spicy signature. The wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels 30% of which are new. Deep garnet in colour with an explosive nose of black and blue fruits, expresso coffee and dark cherries. On the palate super smooth, silky tannins, wild blackberries, and well-integrated oak. Cigar box, pencil shavings and roasted coffee beans now coming through as the wine matures. A succulent long finish packed with dark chocolate and spicy fruits – complex and elegant. You know the best foods to drink classic claret with, but unusually this claret is also very drinkable on its own. Such stunning quality for such an affordable price!
