Sancerre (Rouge), Domaine Pierre Riffault 2023 (6b case) 15%abv
£132.00
Pinot Noir
It is hard to believe that until recently Sancerre was more famous for its red wines, made from Pinot Noir, than its white wines — the rise and rise of Sauvignon Blanc put a stop to all that. Now red Sancerre is making a comeback as global warming kicks in and a different style of Pinot Noir is now being made.
Bertrand Riffault makes only 3,000 bottles per year of red Sancerre (see family notes under Sancerre Blanc section) and both of his Sancerre’s are always in high demand!
The Pinot Noir grapes for this exceptional wine are grown on steep slopes to maximise sun exposure, manually sorted, and then vinified 2/3rds in S/S vats and 1/3rd oak barrels. This is a beguiling wine that you would not believe comes from a more northern part of France. Much more powerful than expected, with notes of wild strawberries and black cherry. Caressingly soft with a slight minty freshness balanced with whiffs of spice.
Drink anytime on its own slightly chilled or with foods of your choice and spring sunshine. A very different take on that magical grape Pinot Noir.
