Sauvignon Blanc
This is our 17th consecutive Sancerre vintage from the Riffault family and their vineyards in the lovely rolling hills of Sancerre and it now has a new name. Betrand Riffault has changed the name from Domaine Carroir Perrin to Domaine Pierre Riffault in honour of his legendary father who sadly died a few years ago.
Over 20 small, sloping plots of land enable them to blend the different terroirs — limestone pebbles for fresh fruity wines and flint for minerality and maturity. Well balanced, full of lime and citrus fruits with the typical Sancerre nose of green fruits and cherry blossom. A long refreshing finish, delicious when young but developing more complex flavours when kept for a couple of years –it really can age as the late Pierre Riffault demonstrated to us a few years ago by sharing a bottle of the 1986 vintage with us in his cellar.
Unfortunately “the world” seems to be in love with Sancerre and when combined with recent low volume vintages then the cost can only go one way. The 2025 vintage is representative of warmer years like 2015 and 2018. The natural acidity is well balanced by a greater roundness and richness on the palate. Bertrand’s  Sancerre is a very versatile wine that can be appreciated on its own, as well as with a diverse range of foods such as shellfish, pork with apple, creamy fish dishes, oriental foods and of course the famous local goats cheese — fromage Chèvre Crottin de Chavignol.
