Pouilly Fuissé 1er Cru, Domaine Philippe Charmond, Sur la Roche 2020 (6b case)
£132.00
Chardonnay
All of us feel very pleased when we buy something that is great value for money and if you enjoy good wine then this is a must buy. It is also a little piece of history as after a 10-year application process, the French government has finally approved the classification for the first time of Premier Cru vineyards within the Pouilly Fuissé region of Burgundy. Commencing with the 2020 vintage there are 22 communes designated as Premier Cru, representing around 20% of the region’s wines and “Sur la Roche, Vergisson” is one of those.
Owner and winemaker Philippe Charmond’s hand harvested grapes are fermented in 25% new oak and 25% old oak Burgundian barrels. The other 50% comes from s/s thermo-regulated tanks, which when blended gives subtle hints of toast and vanilla without being overpowering. The wine has more lively acidity than most New World chardonnays but still has the richness of ripe melon, peach and honeyed pears. Sweet spices and freshly cracked nuts mingle with hints of smoke and indulgence.
Overall that perfect balance which is exceedingly difficult to find – ripe fruits, mineral character and judicious oak ageing. A wine for fish, white meats or indeed anything with strong sauces or flavours. Also, a wonderfully versatile wine for the cheeseboard.
Drink now–2026.
