Côteaux du Giennois, Domaine Langlois, Les Charmes 2021 (6b case)

£93.00

Sauvignon Blanc
With the price of a decent Sancerre now northwards of £20 a bottle (except our Sancerre from Domaine Carroir Perrin of course) then lovers of Loire Sauvignon Blanc need to go to new places. The smart choice is the relatively unknown next-door neighbour Côteaux du Giennois. Here if you search hard enough you can find Sancerre style and quality without the Sancerre price-tag.
The organic Domaine of Catherine and Michel Langlois located in the village of Pougny is the best alternative that we have found. Awards abound with this wine — Côteaux du Giennois , Les Charmes 2021 was also selected by the 2022 Guide Hachette and awarded a Gold Medal by the Concours Mondiale des Feminalise (this incidentally is a rather unique award as all the judges must be women). Traditional wine making techniques all geared to maintaining the freshness and purity of the fruit.
Clearly Sauvignon Blanc on the nose and on the palate, but also a few different things going on. Less aggressive perhaps and softer and hence much easier to drink them most other Sauvignons. A fresh, clear wine with ripe, citrus fruits enveloping the lemony backbone. A background of white flowers with exotic notes and yes, this is a slightly different style of wine to Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. It drinks wonderfully well on its own, as an aperitif or with all things from river or sea. Also, light white meats, vegetarian dishes and of course the famous local goat’s cheese.
Try Coteaux du Giennois side by side with a Sancerre or a Pouilly Fumé and forget about the cost saving – you might actually prefer the Giennois!
