Lalande de Pomerol, Château des Moines, 2021 (6b case)

£105.00

Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec

Just a wedge north of Pomerol itself, the best wines from Lalande de Pomerol offer an easily affordable alternative to those of its illustrious neighbour. Patrick Merle, the owner is a local character but also a wine producer of excellence. This is a wine that displays all of the complexity expected from classic claret, but coming from a Merlot perspective rather than a Cabernet Sauvignon perspective!  The now unusual (but used to be the norm for right bank Bordeaux) addition of Malbec really does make a difference and helps this wine punch well above its weight.

Long maceration and 12 months of ageing in American oak barrels produces a dark ruby red wine with an distinctive nose of  red berries and dark skinned fruits. On the palate the wine is large, bold with good structure and plush well defined tannins. Deep concentrated wooded fruits, cassis, black olives and smooth roasted espresso with a finale that is rich and lasting.
As this wine is only just starting it’s illustrious drinking life now, it will benefit from decanting prior to enjoying!
A wine for hearty suppers, roaring fires, Sunday roasts or alternatively when you just need to be “wowed” during the week!
