Pinot Noir
It really is quite amazing how the cost of Burgundy wines has increased over the last 10 years or so. The wine trade now regards entry-level red Burgundy to start at £30 / bottle! So if you feel that opening your village Gevry Chambertin or Nuits St. George at around £60 per bottle, is a bit over the top for your Tuesday evening Pinot Noir hit, then what do  you do?
The answer is to do what we do and drink this artisan red Burgundy at only £20 per bottle! It is from the little known Côte d’Auxerre just west of Chablis and made by our friends at Domaine Fillon et Fils in the pretty village of Saint Bris le Vineux. Climate warming is certainly helping ripen Pinot Noir this far north and the quality of the wines have improved significantly over the past decade.
The vines face south and are grown on clay/limestone soils. After very light pressing and maceration in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine then enjoys ageing in French oak barrels  – very unusual at this price point. Resulting in intense aromas of red berries, wild strawberries, morello cherry and vanilla. Even a kiss of liquorice!  Soft, silky well integrated tannins and it even has that subtle minerality zip from its close neighbour Chablis.
Perfect with red meats, feathered game, coq au vin, big soft cheeses and surprisingly a great partner for a nice seared tuna steak.
Your affordable red Burgundy problem solved!
