St. Emilion Grand Cru Classé, Ch. La Croizille 2015 (6b Case) 14.5% vol
£294.00
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon.
Château La Croizille is a cult wine that benefits from the same superb terroir as high-rolling neighbours like Ch. Pavie,Ch. La Mondotte, and Ch.Tetre Roteboeuf. Since the most recent re-classification of St. Emilion wines in 2022 it now proudly sits within the elite Grand Cru Classé grouping. A classic Saint-Emilion blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon with limited production of around 12,000b per year. Old vines, manual harvesting with 2 or 3 passes through the vineyard, plot by plot winemaking, 3 to 5 weeks of long temperature-controlled maceration and between 15 and 24 months maturing in new French oak barrels.
This class of wine can never be cheap, but it still can be great value. Now just at the start of its drinking window, it is a wine loved by many leading wine critics. Greg Sherwood MW, Fine Wine Safari has this to say about the 2015 Croizille:
“A nose perfumed by cherry blossoms and kirsch liqueur. Caramelised oak notes tease like sprinkles on a cholate cake. The palate is dark, dense powerful and packed with opulent exotic flavours of plum sauce, cherry confit, and vanilla pod spice. The balance is exceptional spreading wide across the palate. This is right bank Bordeaux at its seductive, classical best. What an impressive wine!”
