Piquepoul
Picpoul de Pinet only became an appellation in 2013, yet is to be found on the wine lists of most good UK restaurants as it is just loved by the Brits!  In fact the UK accounts for over a third of all Picpoul de Pinet sold even though we don’t have the Mediterranean sunshine to go with it.  Why do we love it so much? Is it because we can easily pronounce the name, or that it is fresh and lemony but not bitingly acidic, or even just it’s zingy fruitiness with a saline edge? Whatever, we just seem to drink more and more of it!
Our Picpoul de Pinet comes from Domaine de Belle Mare, a family estate located on the shores of the famous Thau lagoon. This is quite unusual as about 85% of all Picpoul is made in co-operatives rather than independent winemakers.
The white Piquepoul grape grows only in a dry climate and aided by the warm, humid sea breezes that enables the grapes to ripen very late, sometimes well into October. This wine is all about the grape and the terroir ! Rated “Highly Recommended” in Decanter magazine April 2019, it shows a silver -green appearance, bright and alluring. A discreet nose of white flowers, pears and hawthorn blossom. Fresh, clean with mouth filling flavours of lemons and grapefruit with a long, lean finish. As Decanter says “an attractive wine with lots to say”.
Drink young and well chilled–an absolute classic with any type of seafood and also a wonderful aperitif. A must have wine for any cellar and at a great price.
