 Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc
The Cru Bourgeois category of Médoc wines is where some great value claret can be found, and Chateau Hourbanon 2012 is a fine example. Hugues Delayat took over the family estate in 1997 and produces some stunning winesthat will appeal to those who preferthe more traditional style of red Bordeaux.
The vines average around 40 years of age and are farmed organically. High planting density and low yields help produce very concentrated wines with a great capacity to age. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, hand sorting during the harvest and ageing in French oak barrels for 1 year, creates a classic claret.
A deep ruby red colour with purple reflections, the nose is powerful and complex with waves of ripe black fruits – blackcurrant & blackberry. The attack is fresh and opens to reveal supple and harmonious tannins with well integrated oak, a touch of spice and a long and interesting finish. A wine that is now just reaching its peak but will live for many years yet. Even at this age it will benefit from prior decanting. It is a wine made for all red meats, dense cheeses and, a particular favourite of oursfor the second bottle of the evening is a dark chocolate dessert!
It may be old fashioned but it is a real compliment to call this a “Crusty Colonel” style of wine.
