Cahors, Domaine de Cause 2015

Remember the old saying “what goes around comes around”? Well it certainly applies to Cahors and it’s Malbec vines! For over 2000 years Malbec grapes (or Côt to use the local name) have been cultivated in the region to make the so called black wine of Cahors. It has always been consumed locally but also became a favourite of the English, Russian and French royalty. However it’s popularity slumped after WWII but the success of Argentinian Malbec has created a new band  of wine lovers returning to the home of Malbec and Cahors.
Serge and Martine Costes, owners of this beautiful 15ha family estate, hand harvest 20 different parcels of grapes and vinify them separately.  Maturation is in vats for 21 months before racking and bottling producing a deep red/purple wine and an explosion of black and red fruits. Big and voluptuous, soft and luscious, pepper and spice with lively yet soft tannins and a long, long finish.
This wine benefits from opening an hour or so before drinking and goes well with strong foods and flavours. Particularly one of those food matches made in heaven—a good steak and a good Malbec.
