Merlot, Cabernet Franc
A graduate in environmental sciences, Vincent L’Amouller returned home to Blaye in 2011 to become the 5th generation of his family to grow vines in this rather special part of Bordeaux. Overlooking the Gironde estuary facing the Medoc so opposite some of the world’s biggest names in St. Julian, this estate is now fully organic and Vincent is a true believer in minimal intervention with nature — solar panels, rainwater capture, no synthetic chemicals and much more.
Le Gabier was the highest ranked sailor on the old tall sailing ships and his job was to look after all the rigging and sails. The first Amouller was a Gabier from Brittany but in 1909 stayed on in Blaye to get married and become a vigneron!
A very fruity blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, Le Gabier is a red Bordeaux wine made in a fresher lighter style. This charming wine sees no oak and according to Vincent “offers a beautiful compromise between finesse and complexity.” A dashing ruby colour with aromas of ripe fruits leads you into a wine that is both soft and silky but still shouts Bordeaux!
A wine for those that prefer a lighter style of Bordeaux at lunchtime or indeed try slightly chilled for a different tasting experience. To be drunk within 5 years of the vintage to appreciate its full freshness Le Gabier drinks well on its own or alternatively with somewhat lighter meals than your usual red Bordeaux.
A great example of how versatile Bordeaux wines can be!
